Be Where Your Feet Are

I've been finding myself thinking a lot about "what might have been" recently. What might have happened if I said something else, or reacted differently in a situation. Unfortunately this leads to a lot of me being totally consumed with what happened in the past, instead of focusing on the day in front of me.

Whenever I find myself thinking too much about things that I can't go back and change, I have to remind myself to be where my feet are - in the now. My feet are with me in the present, and they'll be with me as I move forward into the future, but they can't ever go back in the past.

A quick example, here: yesterday at our first home football game, as I was walking into the student section my phone fell out of my hand and landed screen first onto the ground. I knew as soon as it landed that it was most likely shattered and I didn't even want to pick it up. I did though, and yep - I was right. My screen is super shattered, and as someone who has never cracked a screen before, it's really disappointing. I think about it every time I look at my phone - which as a 21 year old, is a lot! But what was I going to do? Go back in time and not accidentally drop it? Magically heal the screen without dropping $100? I can't do that, so I just had to embrace the fact that my screen is cracked and I have three options moving forward: paying to replace it, living with a cracked screen, or waiting until my contract is up and I can upgrade to a new phone.

The past is in the past for a reason. Yes, maybe things would be different if we had done or said different things, but we didn't! Things are the way that they are for a reason - and if they are meant to be different, then they will all fall into place eventually.

As humans we are constantly moving forward. We have to keep our eyes on the prize and move forward until we get where we're going. We have to be where our feet are.


  1. It sucks that you cracked your screen! I've done it three times, so I totally feel you pain. I once went almost 3 months with a cracked screen waiting to get enough money to buy a new one. The perks of that is that it keeps you off your phone as much though!

  4. I love this! "The past is the past for a reason" is so true. A favorite quote (and book of mine) is "where ever you go there you are" - we can't escape ourselves but we can learn from our thoughts and actions and be better next time!

  5. That is a huge bummer about your phone :( but I think that you found a really valuable lesson. It's so important to not dwell on the past and that can be hard to remember sometimes.

  7. This is such an important message! I've totally had instances where I've felt like, "ugh, if I would have just done x, y, and z this wouldn't have happened!" and I dwell on my mistakes. (Especially cracked phone screens...been there...twice! Once, I left my phone on the top of my car and drove off. Total face palm.) But you're so right, the past is in the past and we must learn to be present and appreciate it! :)

  12. Great post! I got the iPhone 6 when it first came out because I was still using an iPhone 4S that was in perfect condition, I just needed an upgrade. I had that 4S for 2.5 years and there wasn't a scratch on it, 2 weeks into having the 6 I tripped coming out of class and completely shattered it, but my choice was drop my phone or roll my ankle and most likely break it. I'm glad I chose to save my ankle over my phone, but it still sucked that it was shattered and I had to get another one because glass was coming off everywhere! Good luck with yours!!

  13. I love this idea. It's so true, even in the case of breaking your phone. It's so easy to think "what could I have done to not drop it," but that's not really going to help you or fix the situation. great post!


  14. I love this post! My dad has always encouraged me with saying "keep moving forward" and it has gotten me through so much! Whenever I feel regrets about the past, I remind myself of how I can't change a thing, the past is the past for a reason, and keep moving forward (don't look back!). I've found out that whenever I look back, I miss out on the amazing things that are right before me this very second. That would be my daughter, and goodness I don't want to miss out on the amazing blessing she is :)
